Socarrat

REF: 0081

64,00€

Refractory clay plate, with appliqué to hang on the wall. The surface treatment is unique, done entirely by hand in the Alfajar workshop. Dimensions: 17x22x1 cm.

Socarrat is an original piece that has a unique surface treatment, handmade with iron oxides, manganese, cobalt and ash glazes, combining reserve wax and sgraffito techniques. Fired in single firing at 1250º C in an oxidizing atmosphere. The entire process is carried out in our Alfajar workshop and by the hand of our artisans; each piece has the handwritten signature of its author. In its medieval origin, the socarrat were decorated clay plates, intended to be placed between beams, on roofs and eaves of buildings. Very typical of the Spanish east, in Valencian, socarrat means "scorched". In Alfajar we use this historical support with a different perspective and our own style, creating unique pieces.

Socarrat Alfajar (Alfajar socarrat)

The Alfajar imaginary of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures together with the pure abstraction of lines and colors adapt perfectly to the different scales. In small format we can find from the mythical bulls, to the classic plates, bottles or jewelery boxes. An infinity of shapes that will fill your home with warmth. All these pieces are made 100% by hand in Malaga, Spain and bear the handwritten signature of their author. After 30 years of experience we can affirm that the objective of Alfajar is to express the inner relationship of each person with the world, and therefore, with the nature around them. In this case through small pieces or vases, transferring that relationship with the world to ceramic volume and in this case with the wide range of bottles and vases that we have. All our pieces are inspired by the traditional ceramic shapes of the different cultures that have populated the Mediterranean: Etruscan, Iberian, Mycenaean, Muslim, Greek and Roman, although treated with a coherence of style that implies a geometric stylization of the silhouettes and a simplification of volumes and structures. Cubism and expressionism also play a very important role in our work. Our intention is to achieve that synthesis between the simplification of classical Mediterranean forms and the avant-garde of the 20th century.

Important information

All the pieces are different and unique, that is what it makes them special . After the purchase process, you will receive a piece with the same style as the one you are seeing, but the drawings and final finish of the enamels may vary a little. Everything is hand made.

Can I put water inside my ceramic?

There are some models that are designed expressly for that, as is the case of vases. These models are enameled inside, which waterproofs them and prepares them for use with water. In the event that they are not enameled inside, it could easily be refilled with water, but the base would ooz a little water, like the example of Spanish “botijo”. The ceramic body would not be damaged but a small plate would have to be placed underneath.
