Opening a window to knowledge
Con el fin de fomentar el intercambio de experiencias en el ámbito de la Cerámica Contemporánea, Alfajar organizó en el verano de 2018 un Simposio hispano-ruso de ceramistas.
For fifteen days, ten Spanish potters and eleven Russian potters selected and invited by Alfajar lived together in Alhaurín de la Torre. During this artistic coexistence they made ceramic works in our workshops.
The background to this experience was the participation of Lola Díaz and José Ángel Ruiz in an International Symposium held the previous year in the Russian city of Checboksari, to which they were invited.
The activity of the participants was not limited to ceramic work. Alfajar programmed and carried out a series of visits to natural places of interest such as El Caminito del Rey and different museums in the city such as the Russian Museum, Fine Arts and Archaeology, Pompidou and the Picasso Birthplace Foundation, with the purpose of disseminating culture among our guests, who said they took a great impression of our environment.
In addition, within this symposium, an activity open to the public was carried out to bring the people of Alhaurin closer to the Rakú technique. The name raku-yaki (楽焼) is a traditional Eastern technique for making utilitarian pottery. The word means “fun” or “happiness.” Rakú is a complex alchemy where the four elements (earth, fire, water and air) intervene, resulting in unique, always wonderful pieces.
