The Góngora family creates “Hills of tradition”
21 February 2025 – 8 April 2025

The Góngora family has been in the pottery business for over 160 years (since 1846). In the beginning, they made utilitarian pieces with no artistic aspects; ceramics for everyday use or for construction. But over the years and with the new generations, an evolution took place, adapting to the times and needs, introducing new techniques in their pottery and enriching and expanding their ceramic knowledge. Thus, the last two generations work with the potter’s wheel and tradition, but also with all kinds of decorative and artistic techniques.

They specialise in traditional pottery from their homeland, Úbeda, of an intense green colour, with beautiful openwork, made on the wheel and with techniques passed down from generation to generation. They have innovated with new materials such as stoneware and porcelain, and using contemporary techniques such as Raku, zinc crystallization, sulphates, high temperature… Their most special large pieces or beautifully decorated Granada amphorae have won awards throughout Spain.

From “Los Cerros de Úbeda”, the fifth and sixth generation of potters from the Góngora family, present us with an exhibition full of much more than tradition.
Alfonso H. Góngora, one of the longest-serving potters still active today, with more than 40 years of experience, transforms almost as if by magic, clay into truly exceptional pieces.
Toni Cruz, Alfonso’s wife, is a specialist in ceramic ornamentation. She teams up with her husband to create an endless number of wonderful and unique borders, both painted and sgraffito.
The sixth generation of this family is made up of Alfonso, an archaeologist who made tradition his best base to take a spectacular step towards contemporary craftsmanship. And Laura, a graduate in Fine Arts, whose passion is painting the fascinating works that her father creates.
The pottery tradition is the foundation of this family. And from the love of this tradition, the fifth and sixth generations pay homage to it through different ways of seeing ceramics: clay, art and innovation.
